What to Expect When Receiving Dental Fillings

What to Expect When Receiving Dental Fillings from Aspiring Smiles Dental and Braces in Las Vegas, NVDental fillings are now more common and less invasive than ever before. Dental fillings can help repair teeth damage, but they do not always work in every situation. Here is an explanation of why one might need dental fillings and what to expect before and after the procedure.

Understanding dental fillings

Why do people need dental fillings?

Tooth decay is the most common reason for needing a dental filling. If left untreated, it can damage the natural tooth structure and cause pain, sensitivity, and tooth loss. The amount of damage left behind will determine the type of filling the dentist uses: composite or porcelain.

Composite dental fillings consist of a tooth-colored material known as composite resin. The material is durable and mostly used on the back upper or lower molars. With proper care, these dental fillings can last up to 10 years.

Porcelain fillings consist of a ceramic material the dentist can color-match to the patient’s natural teeth. However, porcelain fillings are considered the most durable of all available dental filling materials (gold, amalgam, and composite). Dentists mostly use these dental fillings on the front teeth, but either material will provide a natural finish.

What to expect during the dental filling procedure

The dental filling process is simple, only taking four steps. Step one is numbing the area. The dentist will first numb the area around the tooth using a local anesthetic. This will help minimize any discomfort or pain during the procedure. Step two involves removing the decay. Once the area is numb, the dentist will use a drill or laser to remove decayed portions of the tooth. This step will create a space for the filling material. Step three is placing the filling. The dentist will then place the filling material into the space by injecting it or layering it (depending on the type of material used). The fourth and final step involves shaping and polishing. The dentist will shape and polish the filling to ensure it fits properly and looks natural. This step prevents any rough edges that could irritate the tongue or cheeks.

What to expect after the dental filling procedure

Immediately following the procedure, patients will be able to drive themselves home. However, some side effects include sensitivity to hot and cold temperatures and slight pressure on the treated tooth. Therefore, in the first 24 hours, avoid chewing on hard or chewy foods as well as flossing. It is also worth noting that the local anesthetist will wear off hours after the procedure is complete, making it unlikely for patients to taste foods or beverages during this time.
